Memo for bicycle, scooter and moped riders

Pursuant to the Law of the Republic of Lithuania on Road Traffic Safety, a vehicle with at least two wheels and an internal combustion engine or electric motor with a maximum net power of 1 kW and a maximum speed of 25 km/h is attributed to a motor bike. The driver of such a vehicle must comply with the requirements of chapter VIII of the Highway Code (Requirements for Bicycle Drivers).

Bicycles, motorbikes, or to this category belonging electric scooters and rollers, can be driven in bicycle trails, pedestrian trails, bicycle lanes on the road or if any of these are not available - then roadside. While driving along a roadside, sidewalk or pedestrian and bicycle trails, the driver of an electric scooter must give way to pedestrians, not obstruct them, or endanger them. Please note that drivers of these vehicles are prohibited from crossing the carriageway with pedestrian crossings..

When there is no bicycle lanes, pedestrian trails or roadside, these vehicles can be driven on the sidewalk or on the lane of the driveway, as close as possible to its right. It’s forbidden to drive except in the cases specified in paragraph 106 of the Road Traffic Code, also to overtake an obstacle, or to drive straight on when turning from the first lane only to the right.

When driving on the lane of the driveway, the driver must wear a bright coloured vest with reflective elements or there must be a white light at the front of the bicycle and a red light at the rear. A safety helmet is mandatory for minors (under 18 years of age) when driving such a vehicle.

Ride with bicycle on the lane of the driveway (or electric scooter speed up to 25 km/h and power up to 1 kW) is allowed for persons over 14 years of age. Persons over 12 years of age also can ride on the lane of the driveway, but they need to be completed the training course set by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania and have a school certificate. Children over 8 years of age are allowed to ride with bicycle on the lane of the driveway only with adult supervision. There is no age limit for bicycle riders in the residential area. Adults must ensure that minors behave properly on the road and set an appropriate (good) example for themselves.

The Lithuanian Road Police Service reminds that persons, who use electric scooters, like all persons in public traffic, must comply with the requirements of the Road Traffic Code, they must be careful, protect themselves and respect others on the road. It is important to be conscious - you are not alone on the road, mutual respect and prudence are the basis for safe participation in traffic.

The Lithuanian Road Police Service informs that point 5 of the Road Traffic Rules states that road users must be aware of the Law on Road Traffic Safety, know and observe the Road Traffic Rules.
